Deal reached to close Calif's $26B budget deficit

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and California's legislative leaders agreed Monday on a plan to close the state's $26 billion budget shortfall, potentially getting the state back on firm financial ground so it can stop issuing IOUs.

Pedestrian struck by car; in critical condition

A 16-year-old boy was struck by a car while crossing Bouquet Canyon Road north of Newhall Ranch Road Monday afternoon, and is in critical condition, according to a news release from the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station.

Deputies go to summer school for special training

School may be out for thousands of Santa Clarita Valley youth, but that doesn't stop Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station deputies from working hard in the summer heat to ensure the safety of the students when they do return to classes this fall.

As part of an ongoing effort to ensure deputies from the station are trained and prepared to immediately respond to any emergency on or around our school campuses in the Santa Clarita Valley, deputies are using school campuses during the summer months to conduct realistic rapid response and deployment training.

Gordon Waller of '60s pop duo Peter and Gordon dies at 64

HARTFORD, Connecticut (AP) - Gordon Waller of the pop duo Peter and Gordon, who were part of the 1960s British Invasion and had a string of hits including several written by their friend Paul McCartney, has died. He was 64.

Waller died Friday at The William W. Backus Hospital in Norwich, Connecticut, nursing supervisor Nity Oris confirmed Monday. The duo's Web site says Waller, who lived in Ledyard, Conn., went into cardiac arrest Thursday night. The state medical examiner's office lists his cause of death as cardiovascular disease.
