Sewer rate, storm water hearings today at 3:30 p.m. and 6 p.m.

Two separate water-related hearings are scheduled for today at Santa Clarita City Hall. The Santa Clarita Valley Sanitation District meets at 3:30 p.m. to vote on a proposed sewer rate increase. If approved, the sewer rate will jump from $14.92 per month, for the average homeowner, to $47 per month by 2015. The proposed rate hike will pay to upgrade two Santa Clarita sewer treatment plants. California high court upholds gay marriage ban

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - The California Supreme Court upheld a voter-approved ban on same-sex marriage Tuesday, but it also decided that the estimated 18,000 gay couples who tied the knot before the law took effect will stay wed. The 6-1 decision written by Chief Justice Ron George rejected an argument by gay rights activists that the ban revised the California constitution's equal protection clause to such a dramatic degree that it first needed the Legislature's approval.
