Canyon Year in Review: Growing Gains

What do you call a year like Canyon had in 2008-09? Up and down? A struggle? A growth year? It would definitely be a growth year if some of the youth grows up in a big way in 2009-10. There are candidates. In basketball, Brooke Lemar and Brandon Perry could lead their teams to brighter days. In track and field, a pair of sophomores-to-be in Tiffini Stone and Taylor Thomas, as well as some more ...

Carl Boyer: Avast, ye robber barons!

Brian Charles' story in Tuesday's Signal (June 16) mentioning a "revenue neutral" payment of perhaps $3 million annually, perhaps in perpetuity - in exchange for westside unincorporated communities being allowed to have some measure of local government - leaves me outraged.

Happy Daddy’s Day

It seems like just yesterday you wiped away my tears. Late at night I called your name, and you came to chase away my fears. We're both growing and changing now, and as the minutes, hours and days go away. I couldn't be more grateful that God sent me your way. You're the best man I have ever met, so genuine, funny, smart but best of all you care. When I look at you Daddy ...

Apparently, happy people don’t vote

Frank Ferry certainly has an interesting take on low voter turnout. When asked about the poor turnout during his last election, Frank states, "It's not necessarily a bad thing when people don't vote," adding that low numbers may tend to show residents are content with city government. While most people would probably attribute low turnout to apathy, Frank thinks it is due to contentment with the status quo. Most educators would encourage people to vote, ...

Tim Myers: Hey, what happened to proportional representation?

Since no one ever spends serious money doing actual statistically sound polls around a Santa Clarita City Council election, the entire process since city formation stands fraught with apocryphal tales that achieve mythic status.

Finicky fruits and cubby-holed bureaucrats

Drive out Highway 126 from Castaic Junction to the Pacific Ocean and take a good look at the orange and lemon groves, strawberry patches, flower factories, palm forests and avocado jungles that line the Santa Clara River. All told, that's a $700 million industry annually.

Kids' suspensions renew debate over zero tolerance

Waiting in line for the bus, a Pennsylvania kindergartener tells her pals she's going to shoot them with a Hello Kitty toy that makes soap bubbles. In Maryland, a 6-year-old boy pretends his fingers are a gun during a playground game of cops and robbers. In Massachusetts, a 5-year-old boy attending an after-school program makes a gun out of Legos and points it at other students while "simulating the sound of gunfire," as one school official put it.
