Minerva L. Williams: Health care reform is worth fighting for

The word from the Organizing America crew is that Secretary of Health Kathleen Sebelius recently "misspoke" regarding the "public option."

McKeon makes the effort

Regarding Congressman Buck McKeon's recent tele-town hall meeting - I wonder why Sen. Boxer and/or Sen. Feinstein did not schedule town halls during the summer break.

Lies during town hall

I listened to most of Congressman McKeon's recent tele-town hall meeting. While he and his guest (Congressman Price, R-Ga.) did make some reasonable arguments (which I disagree with), two inexcusable statements were made. Price reasoned that President Obama must be in favor of providing illegal aliens with health care since he hadn't spoken out against it. The second bit of twisted logic involved the elimination of Tri-Care (a health care program for the military) and ...

Tim Myers: Credit is due: the revenue side

Part 2 in a series. Dr. Norbert J. Schuerman served the Omaha Public Schools ("OPS") in the capacity of superintendent for more than 13 years from 1984 to 1997, serving the prior 11 years in the capacity of associate and assistant superintendent. Personally working in Omaha from 1985 to 1994, I felt that Schuerman enjoyed a strong tenure of leadership, despite the fact he never worried about revenue. Schuerman's detractors liked to refer to him ...

Lunetta's vitriol

Once again, Steve Lunetta ("Death of a lion?" The Signal, Aug. 31) has proved he has totally disregarded his mother's "if you can't say something nice" advice and replaced it with another load of tasteless vitriolic sewage.

Robert Lamoureux: Flooded home results in serious precautions

Robert, Recently we had a Reverse Osmosis system line (plastic lines and plastic compression fittings) separate under our sink at around 4 a.m. By the time we rose at 5:30 a.m., there was a lot of water on our kitchen floor (ceramic tile), and our dining room floor (laminate). I won't take up your time with all of the details as the insurance company covered 100 percent of the almost $8,000 in damage. Fortunately, I ...

Michael Picarella: Poor memory, angry wife

My wife says I forget things she tells me, but I don't remember. She often tells me these things when I'm working on something - in deep concentration. Days later, when she accuses me of forgetting what "we discussed," I tell her I most likely didn't hear what she said because I was busy. She usually says, regarding the moment when she tells me the thing I supposedly forget, that I respond to her. "Did ...

Decoro now safer

I support the new bike lane on Decoro Road in north Valencia. Several years ago a rowdy group of citizens from the Saugus area came to City Hall and protested having a bike path behind their houses. Some of them even went so far as to threaten the lives of our then-councilmembers. The bike path was never put in. Today, most of those people who protested no longer live in those houses. Their action deprived ...

Firefighters remembered as murder case picks up

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Investigators worked around-the-clock Friday as they sought to build a murder case stemming from a huge wildfire that claimed the lives of two firefighters. California's governor offered a $100,000 reward in the arson case. Authorities blocked access to the crime scene, a scorched area of scrub and trees off the side of the Angeles Crest Highway, as they analyzed clues including incendiary material reported to have been found there. Authorities say ...

Joe Klocko: The conundrum: supply and demand, wages and the skills gap

Most people understand the basic economic principle of supply and demand and incorporate it into their daily decisions. They may not do it consciously, but economic decisions are made every day by each and every one of us.
