Message from Captain of SCV Sheriff's Station

Greetings! It's time to touch base again and talk about some of the trends, concerns, challenges, and successes we've seen in the first six months of 2009. As you know, it is my philosophy that the better informed our deputies and the community are, the more efficiently and effectively we can work together to keep our community safe.

Two Women on Wine: Wonderful world of wine stores

What does a wine store, hardware store, bookstore, and lingerie store all have in common? They're all specialty stores. Retailers who specialize in a particular type of merchandise and who employ a knowledgeable staff trained to answer questions and solve problems. Think of it this way: When you need a bra, do you go to the grocery store? Or a special wrench. Would a bookstore have that item?

Movie Review: 'Funny People'

Stand-up comics feel compelled to make you laugh. They're like an obnoxious uncle, with better material. The competition is so fierce these days that most of them are pretty good. I laugh a lot. But unlike my feelings for Catherine Keener, for example, I don't find myself wishing they were my friends. I suspect they're laughing on the outside but gnashing their teeth on the inside.

A risk that’s paid off

My first-ever job was at a Dairy Queen. They fired me after one day. Since then I've delivered pizzas, officiated laser tag matches and assembled electrolysis machines. I've stocked shelves at an office supply store, sold knives in people's living rooms and tried to convince people to agree to refinance their homes over the telephone.

Keep old politics out

When it comes to a person's health and welfare, old-fashioned politics should not rear its ugly head nor should it play a part in the decision-making regarding one's well-being.
