With Memorial Day behind us and the Fourth of July on the horizon, I got to thinking about the great sacrifices others have made for my freedom - my ability to grill outside without looking up or listening for air raid sirens.

Come on, Ferry

When Santa Clarita City Councilman Frank Ferry ("Ferry: Stop 'developmental terrorism,'" June 1) resorts to name-calling and inflammatory rhetoric, it is an indication that he has no logical argument for his position.

Enforce the law

I loved the letter from Jim Avery Sr. ("Do they object to federal law also?" June 10) about how can we, as a state, boycott Arizona. What the people of California don't realize is that we, as a state, already have this same law on our books.

Roger Gitlin: Jewish support for Obama is waning

Approximately 78 percent of American Jewish constituents voted for President Barack Obama in 2008. No doubt, Jewish support for the 44th president helped to elect him.

David Hegg: The place of virtue

I know I shouldn't be all that surprised, but it always hits me sideways. A college professor whose academic background turns out to be a sham. An incumbent politician whose military record is found to be fiction. Professional athletes caught using illegal drugs to enhance their performance. Journalists discovered to be plagiarizing material and quoting non-existent sources. High-placed executives revealed to have embezzled millions of dollars from their own companies.
