Libraries: What we are losing

I totally agree with Richard Bussell's recent letter, "A library critic responds" (Nov. 21), in which he noted that roughly 95 percent of items he checks out of a Santa Clarita library come from other county libraries. For me, it is probably about 4 out of 5.

No ‘nanny state’

Kevin Buck et al., have a common theme that they continue to preach: That down is up, white is black, and light is dark. Ronald Reagan said it best when he stated that "these people" simply believe things that are not so.

Past commentary

I was so stunned and appalled that your paper would take the time to write such a detailed account of Meg Whitman's boards being painted with pink vandalism ("Swastikas painted on campaign signs," Nov. 2).

Patricia Skinner Sulpizio: Hypocrites in the news

Incoming House Speaker John Boehner won't share a presidential Slurpee, even if 7-Eleven makes one that's purple-lee. The tan man said, "He'll have Merlot." Is he for real or just for show? Looking dapper in his cable-knits, on TV, he throws hissy fits.

Joe Klocko: Criteria for business success

When you think of California do words like innovative, leading-edge and trendy come to mind? A place where new ideas first take root before they become woven into the very fabric of the national culture and industrial base before becoming recognized around the world as being uniquely "American". If so, you may be surprised to learn that in one area, the critical business process of selecting and hiring new employees, California is lagging behind the rest of the country.

Gary Horton: The Buck now stops

Energizer Bunnies keep going and going and going – and for a time, it looked like Buck McKeon would be equally perpetual in motion to those furry little drumbeaters. The man is after all, 75, and still beating war drums while running circles around most of us. Yet now it seems that both Buck the man, and his underlying message of perpetual militarism may be running down, with time well deserved for some R and R away from the military industrial complex.

Busting misconceptions about investor perceptions

We all know that perception often influences our decisions, yet we catch ourselves and become reminded that what we perceive isn't always what's really going on. With the constant barrage of information available in today's 24/7 world, it's important to not get caught up in the day-to-day market volatility and news headlines.
