Death penalty should be abolished

On Nov. 24, Steve Cooley conceded the California attorney general election to Kamala Harris. I am writing to point out that attacking candidates based on their opposition - or perceived opposition - to the death penalty was not successful this election year in California. The death penalty is no longer the third rail of politics.

David Hegg: Real beauty goes beyond just what we see

In the academic arena, the study of philosophy is usually broken down into the areas of metaphysics, ethics and aesthetics. The latter of these seeks to understand the area of beauty, its nature and its benefits.

Tim Myers: Has Santa Clarita become new ‘it’ community?

When one thinks of American suburbs, one thinks of dullness and predictability, the very thing that attracts the demographic that finds the suburbs most appealing. The historical anthropological denizen of the suburbs enjoys the seeming good order of a beige and landscaped existence, where everyone seemingly plans their lives around a long commute, school for the kids, athletic fields on the weekend and turning in at a reasonable hour.

Joe Klocko: Criteria for business success

When you think of California do words like innovative, leading-edge and trendy come to mind? A place where new ideas first take root before they become woven into the very fabric of the national culture and industrial base before becoming recognized around the world as being uniquely "American". If so, you may be surprised to learn that in one area, the critical business process of selecting and hiring new employees, California is lagging behind the rest of the country.

Gary Horton: The Buck now stops

Energizer Bunnies keep going and going and going – and for a time, it looked like Buck McKeon would be equally perpetual in motion to those furry little drumbeaters. The man is after all, 75, and still beating war drums while running circles around most of us. Yet now it seems that both Buck the man, and his underlying message of perpetual militarism may be running down, with time well deserved for some R and R away from the military industrial complex.

We all know that perception often influences our decisions, yet we catch ourselves and become reminded that what we perceive isn't always what's really going on.
