Overdraft fees exploding

OAKLAND -- Banks and credit unions collected nearly $24 billion in overdraft fees last year, an increase of 35 percent from just two years earlier, a new study by the Center for Responsible lending shows. Since Californians make up about 12 percent of the U.S. population, Californians shoulder an estimated $3 billion of the national total, assuming they are charged a proportionate share of these fees.
