'Gifts for Guns' nets 653 firearms in first weekend

LOS ANGELES COUNTY -- Residents surrendered 653 guns, including one grenade, Saturday and Sunday during the first weekend of a two-month expansion of Los Angeles County's "Gifts for Guns" program.

Lyons Canyon OK with Fire Department

Last Tuesday, the Board of Supervisors provided conditional approval for the Lyons Canyon Ranch Project, which is located on unincorporated county land just west of Newhall. The Lyons Canyon Ranch project will consist of 92 single-family dwellings and a senior citizen housing facility that will include 93 units.

Regarding the Letter to the Editor from Sheri Ford, "M.D. impressed by Newhall Memorial" (March 20): Thank God she had a positive experience in our local hospital. High Desert Dance Classic

Placerita Junior High School students took home the first-place trophy during the High Desert Dance Classic March 14. The couples spent eight weeks rehearsing merengue, tango, cha cha, waltz and the West Coast swing. Placerita Junior High was the only school from the William S. Hart Union High School District to participate in the competition.

Cheery news

Hart High School cheerleaders brought home top honors from the USA Nationals High School Spirit Competition held over the weekend at the Anaheim Convention Center. The junior varsity cheer squad took third place place in the Large Junior Varsity Show Cheer Intermediate Division and the varsity squad won for the Large Varsity Show Cheer Advanced Division.
