COC Foundation hosts Wine Classic

The College of the Canyons Foundation will host its 2009 SCV Wine Classic at the California Institute of the Arts May 30. The event will benefit the Santa Clarita Student Orchestra and give guests the opportunity to buy wines and gourmet cuisine.

McKeon blasts Dems on spending, calls for freeze

Rock memorabilia auctioned on e-Bay to aid deputy

Rock superstars have donated autographed musical memorabilia to a special e-Bay auction to benefit a sheriff's deputy stationed in Santa Clarita Superior Court, and battling leukemia.

High schools campaign to fight use of child soldiers

A community campaign is now uniting two William S. Hart Union High School District schools in order to stop the use of child soldiers. Valencia High School is now joining Canyon High School's Human Rights Watch Student Task Force by forming their own Human Rights Club. Both schools have been collecting Red Hands, which symbolize the fight against the use of child soldiers.

Library program helps students

La Mesa Junior High School is noticing an increase in the both student attendance and grades due to the success of the Library Homework Club. The club gives students the opportunity to be helped by teachers and parents after school in a variety of subjects.

Local schools earn recognition

Two schools in the William S. Hart Union High School District have been nominated for recognition as California Distinguished Schools for the 2009-10 year. The schools, Rancho Pico Junior High School and Academy of the Canyons, the Hart District's middle college high school, were selected among some 500 California Schools.

Keep school bands playing

I am an eighth-grade student at La Mesa. I enjoy being in the band. There are money issues going on. I am hoping the other schools can also have a band program. It is nice to have that class.
