Roger Gitlin: Jewish support for Obama is waning

Approximately 78 percent of American Jewish constituents voted for President Barack Obama in 2008. No doubt, Jewish support for the 44th president helped to elect him.

David Hegg: The place of virtue

I know I shouldn't be all that surprised, but it always hits me sideways. A college professor whose academic background turns out to be a sham. An incumbent politician whose military record is found to be fiction. Professional athletes caught using illegal drugs to enhance their performance. Journalists discovered to be plagiarizing material and quoting non-existent sources. High-placed executives revealed to have embezzled millions of dollars from their own companies.

In support of Dr. Dorio

Regarding "We need a professional debate" (The Signal, June 2), I have proudly stood in solidarity with Dr. Gene Dorio on issues regarding our "community hospital."

Thanks for the disclaimer

Regarding "Israel's flotilla massacre: made in the USA" (June 10): Thank goodness The Signal adds a disclaimer to the end of columns from contributing writers. Phyllis Bennis' superior intelligence conveniently didn't mention the flotilla knew full well Israel had a blockade in effect, and that Israel does its best to protect its country. But this gave her such a glorious opportunity to be indignant about the U.S. and shoot her mouth off about how bad we are.

Can I steal your car?

I'm fascinated by Bruce McFarland's concept ("Calling for clergy action," June 8) regarding people who are here illegally.

Politically incorrect

Our liberal, political leaders are misrepresenting Arizona's new immigration laws as "discriminatory."

We need change

I cannot believe it! The April Fool's issue of The Signal is becoming reality. It was a most clever article (in jest, I thought at the time) that told us all the City Council was being voted in "for life" and we wouldn't need anymore elections.

Way to go, Arizona

Three cheers for Arizona and shame on California for the idea of boycotting Arizona.

Obstructionists

In response to the recent rhetoric regarding "environmental terrorism": OK, I get what City Councilman Frank Ferry ("Ferry: Stop 'developmental terrorism,'" June 1) is trying to say, although I might have used the term "developmental obstructionists," because there are indeed vocal individuals in our valley who attempt to oppose any new development for any reason in Santa Clarita.

Are you appalled?

Are you appalled by the front-page story ("City OK's $117K 'Old West' re-do for Newhall Library," May 13) regarding the cost of revised architectural drawings for our new library? So was I.

Busting misconceptions about investor perceptions

We all know that perception often influences our decisions, yet we catch ourselves and become reminded that what we perceive isn't always what's really going on. With the constant barrage of information available in today's 24/7 world, it's important to not get caught up in the day-to-day market volatility and news headlines.
