A Newhall home at 25222 Via Tanara was severely burned Saturday afternoon, officials said. While nobody was injured, and no neighboring houses were damaged, the home was completely engulfed in flames when emergency personnel arrived at around 5 p.m., according to Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Lt. Robert Lewis. The home was burned so bad, it was deemed uninhabitable, Lewis said.
Not only has the William S. Hart Union High School District failed to build the high school it promised, but the district has also failed to keep its promise to keep Castaic students together until the school is built.
Today, Santa Clarita stands just 15 days from the counting of the votes for the City Council election. I say vote-counting day rather than election day, because right now 70 percent to 75 percent of the votes cast for the 2010 election sit in the City Clerk's office or in the hands of the Postal Service.
It has been said the quality of life in Santa Clarita is high, but this is not because our City Council did this.
Two thumbs up for the Santa Clarita Valley sheriff's deputies who had a quick response to the call of a missing man at Whispering Oaks senior apartments on March 2. They were looking for a man missing that night from the apartment complex.
Trying to respond to Nancy Gauthier's letter ("Irrefutable evidence," Feb. 8), attacking George Bush, is akin to following her as she walks across the entire Santa Clarita Valley broadcasting bird seed and trying to pick it all up. I'll respond to what I see as her main point.
In 1996, I published an essay in The Wall Street Journal. Titled "A Magnificent Misfit," the article eulogized my father, a European physician who dedicated his life to his craft and died poor but debtless.
Dear Paul Strickland, Gloria Mercado-Fortine, Bob Jensen Jr., Steve Sturgeon, Joe Messina and Mr. Costanzo:
So our town's cross-valley connector is finally complete, at the staggering cost of a quarter-billion dollars and 10 years' work.
Having just read Gary Horton's opinion piece ("'We' Dems overcome 'me' Reps," March 24), I am thunderstruck by the pure genius of his words.
This is ridiculous. I grew up here, and I have never heard of anything so stupid. (William S. Hart Union High School District officials) need to save $40,000. $40,000 between six schools is less than $7,000 per school.
My child is an eighth-grader this year, and I would like to see her graduate. Why not charge each of the 3,562 eighth-graders $15? This will bring in $53,430, enough to cover the $40,000 needed, plus an additional $13,430. This is assuming that 25 percent will not pay or can't afford it. Seems like an easy fix. Maybe the William S. Hart Union High School District administrators will realize that graduation is an important ...
My daughter is in the seventh grade in the William S. Hart Union High School District. We talked about this yesterday. At a time when huge budget cuts have been made to California schools with more to come, we agreed that the focus should be on gratitude that we in this district are lucky enough to have great teachers, libraries, computers, safe campuses, etc.
I am writing to voice my anger and frustration at the William S. Hart Union High School District and its decision to cancel all junior high school graduation ceremonies.
AMSTERDAM (AP) - A painting that sat for six decades in a Norwegian industrialist's attic after he was told it was a fake Van Gogh was pronounced the real thing Monday, making it the first full-size canvas by the tortured Dutch artist to be discovered since 1928.
JOHANNESBURG (AP) - Richard Van As, a South African carpenter, lost four fingers from his right hand to a circular saw two years ago.
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Apple is expected to unveil its latest take on the iPhone Tuesday during an annual ritual that will probably cast a spotlight on the gadget maker's drive to regain market share and its sluggish pace of innovation.
I am noted for my exclamation marks in ending a sentence when I submit a letter to the editor to the SCV Signal, which seems to annoy some posters.
Today, President Obama will address the nation and try to convince a skeptical American public why it's important to take limited military action in Syria as retaliation for President Bashar al-Assad last month allowing chemical weapons to be used against civilians, killing nearly 1,500 people, including more than 400 children, with sarin gas.
Does any American believe that Army 1st Lt. Clint Lorance, 28, should remain in a military prison for the next 20 years for "murder" after giving a legitimate order to his soldiers to fire at three Afghan men on motorcycles, killing two in the process?
This summer, the Santa Clarita Valley Chamber of Commerce will host the third annual Patriot Luncheon on July 11 at the Hyatt Regency Valencia.
Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich will address the Santa Clarita Valley business and community leaders on May 1 at the fifth annual State of the County Luncheon.
We all know that perception often influences our decisions, yet we catch ourselves and become reminded that what we perceive isn't always what's really going on. With the constant barrage of information available in today's 24/7 world, it's important to not get caught up in the day-to-day market volatility and news headlines. That daily hype doesn't always dovetail with what Wells Fargo Advisors top strategists are observing in the financial marketplace.
With everything from nationally ranked academic programs to effective career education opportunities and college placement services, Hart district students are afforded every opportunity to excel in an increasingly competitive academic environment.
