Backpacks are donated by Scouts

Daniel Otto of the Lightning Patrol is buried under filled backpacks ready for donation to the Department of Children and Family Services. Old Glory Boy Scout Troop 499 recently donated 18 new backpacks filled with school supplies to the local DCFS for children in need. This service project was sponsored by the Lightning Patrol in its effort to earn the BSA National Honor Patrol award. As part of the requirements, the Scouts also spent a morning working at the Children's Hunger Fund warehouse in Pacoima bagging beans for care packages to be sent to needy families locally and around ...

Roger Gitlin: My money is on Meg Whitman for governor

Who is Meg Whitman? Is she your typical bored billionaire looking to buy her way into office? I don't really know, and quite frankly, I don't really care if she spends millions of her own money to be California's next governor. If nothing else, her money helps the economy, creates lots of employment and plenty of jobs in media and advertising that wouldn't necessarily be there if a pauper like me were running for the state's top office.

The libraries are fine

A recent editorial, "The city should take over the SCV's libraries" (Aug. 1), stated that "Santa Clarita is the biggest city in Los Angeles County not to have its own library system." That comes off like "all the other kids have one." We don't need our own library; we are part of a library system that provides services the city can never hope to match.
