It's the economy, Buck

This is a letter sent to Congressman Buck McKeon: Dear Congressman McKeon: As constituents who have voted for you in city and congressional elections, we are appalled at your apparent intractability reflected in your Nov. 19 newsletter as it relates to fixes for our economy. We realize that generally your votes in Congress follow a strict party line, but you could have at least made a statement as it relates to bi-partisan co-operation in ...

Don't paint that tile, you'll regret it

Hello Robert, I've got a question for you. The tile in my bathroom is really ugly. It was here when we moved in and it was something that I wanted to change but have lived with it for a couple of years now. A neighbor suggested I could paint the tiles and I was wondering if there is a particular kind of paint you would recommend. Beth B. Hello Beth, No. Tile paint is available, ...

Church members build home

Nine middle-class United States citizens living in Santa Clarita tasted poverty for one weekend in mid-October. Living in tents set up in a rock-strewn, dusty parking lot surrounded by an old chain link fence, these nine individuals drove to the building site and tirelessly worked to build a house in a poor Tijuana, Mexico, neighborhood.

Henry Mayo’s services must be expanded

Mary Ann and I have lived in this valley for more than 40 years and in the last 10 years have relied heavily on Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital for our health services. It is not an overstatement that our hospital saved my life at least once and arguably twice.

Hospital expansion must fit Valencia dream

The issue of the expansion of the Henry Mayo (Newhall Memorial) Hospital campus and its "master plan" will soon be presented for City Council approval. There are serious questions as to the impartiality of certain council members with regard to this action. I have always believed in the integrity of the individuals that are elected to represent the best interests of their constituents, but I recognize that often misinformation, misrepresentation and misguided values can also ...

Is paying taxes patriotic?

Is paying taxes patriotic? Joe Biden thinks so. The Democratic vice presidential nominee said so during a recent television interview, responding to criticisms of a proposed tax hike on America's richest earners. They should pay more, Biden said, during a time of national instability. "It's time to be patriotic ... time to jump in, time to be part of the deal, time to help get America out of the rut." The comment drew scorn from ...

Don’t place pellet stove on carpet

Hello Mr. Lamoureux, I'm one of your readers and I want to put in a pellet stove. Are you familiar with these? I just had my living room carpeted, and I heard they are safe enough to place on top of carpeting. Is this true, or does it have to be on bare concrete? And what sort of precautions do I have to take to vent up through the roof? Jack W. Hi Jack, Yes, ...

New law provides tax incentives

It's hard to believe that anything that takes nearly 800 pages to describe could be time sensitive, however, the Housing and Economic Recovery Act of 2008 was recently enacted and, for many, it may provide the incentive needed to act now, and finally buy a home of their own. A new $7,500 tax credit for first-time home buyers is a temporary incentive from the government to boost interest in real estate - but the time frame to take advantage of the credit is limited.
