McKeon calls on Gates to justify defense cuts

Washington, D.C. -- U.S. House Armed Services Committee Ranking Member Howard P. "Buck" McKeon (R-Calif.) today called on Secretary of Defense Robert Gates to provide Armed Services Committee Members with detailed information to justify the Secretary's proposed cuts to many Department of Defense programs, commands and authorities.

Interstate 5 lane closures next week

One southbound traffic lane near the Interstate 5 and Highway 14 interchange will be closed from Sunday to Friday for construction, according to the California Department of Transportation. A southbound traffic lane will be closed from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. from I-5 to the Highway 14 connector. One traffic lane on the I-5 northbound truck collector road will also be closed 5-9 a.m. next week.

Concerts series wrapping up

There are only three "Concerts in the Park" left. Durell Colemon, a Motown, classic R&B and current dance tunes band, will take the stage today and California Transit Authority, featuring Chicago founding member Danny Seraphine, will perform on next Saturday. Sheriff’s checks this weekend

Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies will be performing boating-under-the-influence checks at Castaic Lake today and Pyramid Lake on Sunday. Deputies from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's Parks Bureau will be conducting the checks in an attempt to reduce drug- and alcohol-related boating accidents and fatalities and discourage the use of drugs and alcohol at the two lakes, authorities said.

Give us a full summer

What is the Saugus Union School District thinking when it puts together its calendar for the year? Instead of starting later and allowing our families to have a full summer that comes close to being coordinated with Los Angeles Unified School District, it stuffs the year full of days off and minimum days that are a nightmare for working families.
