A heartfelt "thank you" to Newhall's Egg Plantation for starting to switch its eggs to cage-free. Egg Plantation joins a growing movement of restaurants across the country that have taken action on this important animal welfare and sustainability issue.

Thanks for the laughs

Jim Walker's article and "rap" about the loan-modification process ("The 2010 rap - loan modification and self-mutilation," Aug. 20) had me bursting out with laughter. What a creative and clever piece of writing. He hit the nail on the head about the merry-go-round of these loan departments.

The Signal is a very good, informative local paper. I enjoy it, but why can't we have a crossword puzzle on Sundays? I work it every day while having breakfast - but not on Sunday?

Lady Liberty peers outward from behind bars with tears in her eyes. A close look shows she's locked behind the red stripes of a vertically hanging American flag. The Economist cover reads: "Why America locks up too many people." The message? The Land of the Free has inadvertently become the world's largest prison state.

Mixed job picture in Los Angeles County

According to the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corporation (LAEDC), figures released last week showed California's July unemployment rate remained unchanged from June, at 12.3 percent. Joblessness in California continues to be higher than the nation, a trend since September 2008. Only two other states rank higher, Nevada with 14.4 percent and Michigan at 13.1 percent. The loss of thousands of Census workers contributed to the job-loss picture.
