Gary Horton: Get by with a little help from our friends

Dangling at the end of your rope isn't the kind of thing that makes for much fun. This past Sunday, that's exactly how 10 boat guests and I found ourselves, as my boat twisted and pulled against wind and waves, dead in the water, forced-anchored without power a mile offshore from Channel Islands Harbor.

From the mouth of babes

We took our grandson Seth to the Reagan Library yesterday. He was fascinated with the 1/100-scale model of the White House. The docent was explaining to us that all of the rooms had been updated with replicas of the furniture, carpets and wall coverings that President and Mrs. Obama had made.

Nothing has changed, Lunetta

Few things can kick-start a day better than the inane prattling of a Steve Lunetta column. OK, nothing beats the rantings of Betty Arenson, but that is a topic for another day. Lunetta delivers again with "The cultural tie that binds us together" (July 12). If we can believe Mr. Lunetta, and I do, invited a young, African exchange student and characterizes her political views as "claptrap." I guess Lunetta's melting pot only goes so far.

Thanks for the connector

I am writing to express my opinion about the cross-valley connector. I am very appreciative, because my family and I must go across town constantly. It is not only an immense timesaver, but it also makes the gas bill that much smaller.

I love you, but I don't have to like you right now

In a scene from the movie How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, the main character states, "I love you Binky, but I don't have to like you right now." Sometimes this is how we feel about our children, of course we love them, but in certain moments, we do not like them.

Busting misconceptions about investor perceptions

We all know that perception often influences our decisions, yet we catch ourselves and become reminded that what we perceive isn't always what's really going on. With the constant barrage of information available in today's 24/7 world, it's important to not get caught up in the day-to-day market volatility and news headlines. That daily hype doesn't always dovetail with what Wells Fargo Advisors top strategists are observing in the financial marketplace.
