Newhall gift shop hosts fundraiser photo shoot

Rooms & Blooms gift store will host a benefit photo shoot for the Santa Clarita Valley Boys & Girls Club from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and June 5. Professional photographer Sharon Forbes will snap and sell children's photo packages starting at $40, with 25 percent of the proceeds going towards the Boys & Girls Club. CIF softball: Hart slows to a halt

CORONA - After threatening early, the Hart softball team was held to a single hit in the final four innings of a 3-0 loss to Corona in the CIF-Southern Section Division I quarterfinals on Thursday at Corona High School.

ROBERT, La. (AP) -- As BP labored for a second day Thursday to choke off the leak at the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico, dire new government estimates showed the disaster has easily eclipsed the Exxon Valdez as the biggest oil spill in U.S. history.

Gulf spill surpasses Valdez; plug attempt going OK, BP says

COVINGTON, La. (AP) -- An untested procedure to plug the blown-out oil well in the Gulf of Mexico seemed to be working, officials said Thursday, but new estimates showed the spill has already surpassed the Exxon Valdez as the worst in U.S. history.

A team of scientists trying to determine how much oil has been flowing since the offshore rig Deepwater Horizon exploded April 20 and sank two days later found the rate was more than twice and possibly up to five times as high as previously thought.
