A Palmdale man arrested in Santa Clarita on residential burglary charges Monday tried to escape from the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station, but was caught by deputies before he could get away, according to a news release from the station.

Valencia man killed on I-5

Valencia resident Eugene Vilkas, 89, was killed Saturday after a traffic collision on Interstate 5 just north of Interstate 210. Vilkas was the passenger in a car driven by Irena Vilkas on Saturday just before 9 a.m. For unknown reasons, Irena Vilkas lost control of the car, collided with the median and careened across the six southbound lanes of traffic, according to a report from the California Highway Patrol. Emergency responders transported both to Providence Holy Cross Medical Center where Eugene Vilkas died from injuries, according to the report.
