Daylight Savings around the corner

Santa Clarita Valley residents will soon be losing an hour of sleep for Daylight Savings Time. March 8 marks the date people will have to "spring forward" and adjust their clocks an hour ahead. The city of Santa Clarita reminds residents the time change is also a good opportunity to prepare their households for emergencies.

Jose de la Isla: Drugs and border violence are also American issues

Mexico's biggest national security problem stems from its fight with drug cartels. Its domestic body count of nearly 6,000 people last year sounded the alarm. Prominently listed among the grizzly assassinations were gangsters, police, journalists, members of the military and government officials, plus a multitude of collateral victims.

An honest community

When I moved here in April 2008 I had no idea what an honest community Santa Clarita is. In that short time, someone mailed the paycheck I had lost at a Warrior Sr. Chiefs football game - at Christmas-time, no less. My daughter left her Hollister jacket at Hugo's gym, and there it was in the lost and found. Someone else turned in a gift bag I lost at Macy's and just yesterday a neighbor ...

Donate organs, save lives

Regarding Shannon Master's article, "Alive thanks to an organ donor" (The Signal, Feb. 15): The generosity of live-organ donors like the young boy is wonderful. It's a shame we need so many live-organ donors. Americans bury or cremate 20,000 transplantable organs every year.

Julie M. Sturgeon: Be prepared, plan for long-term care

Everyday, 13 million people need assistance with routine activities such as dressing, eating and bathing, according to the Direct Care Alliance. Four out of 10 people turning 65 can anticipate stays in a nursing home, and by the year 2025, 78 million Americans will be over age 65. Most health insurance programs will not usually cover long-term-care expenses.

Where’s the consistency?

Regarding Mr. McKeon's Sunday column ("Stimulus or spending?" published Feb. 15): With all due respect (isn't that what they say in Washington?), I never saw a column objecting to the spending of our grandchildren's money from Mr. McKeon when George Bush took an economy that was a healthy surplus and gave tax cuts to the most wealthy in the country.

City offers annual Daylight Savings Time safety checklist

Sunday, March 8 and the change to Daylight Savings Time is quickly approaching, and although many of us relish the "fall back" mantra that allows us an extra hour of sleep in September, it's easy to forego the added Z's in spring with the thought of waking up to much sunnier, warmer, longer days.
