Review: 'Post Grad'

The Malbys are just plain nice. That's the only word for them. They're a goofy, strange, California suburban family who love one another and share the same sunny sense of humor and nothing terrible ever happens to them and it's all for one and one for all.

Review: 'Inglourious Basterds'

Quentin Tarantino's "Inglourious Basterds" is a big, bold, audacious war movie that will annoy some, startle others, and demonstrate once again that he's the real thing, a director of quixotic delights.

At market ... peaches of summer

This summer, our family got to experience driving across the country ... and back. Luckily, the two massive road trips were separated by a six-week stay in lovely Cape Cod, where my husband's parents live. On our journey eastward, I felt as if I was travelling back in time, at least as far as farm-fresh produce goes. In June, at our Valencia farmers' market, summer had arrived. Fresh herbs and stone fruits abounded, as did ...

Suzette Martinez-Woodruff: Latina not a liberal?

A particular assumption that I often hear leave the lips of yapping Liberals in California irks me at my core. The assumption is that a Hispanic woman should automatically identify herself as a Democrat because the Republican Party is racist and sexist.

The posse on horseback

The Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Posse patrols the SCV's back hills on horseback and helps sheriff's deputies with search-and-rescue calls from here to Malibu. Posse members are fixtures in the SCV's Fourth of July parade, and on Labor Day weekend they'll be trotting along Zuma Beach. The mostly civilian group, founded in 1986, is almost all-volunteer. Sworn deputies in the group earn just $1 a year. Each of its 22 members has a horse, a ...

Why reform health care?

Why do we need a new health care plan? What's wrong with expanding Medicare? Just start it from day one instead of 62 or 65. The business infrastructure is already there and a large percent of the population is already enrolled. They might have to expand the employee end of the business but that's just more stimulus. That is unless all the scare tactics we've been reading about are true.

Concerts in the Park draws a crowd

The city's Concerts in the Park series has garnered heightened interest this summer. Journey tribute band Don't Stop Believing took the stage on Aug. 15, highlighting what has been a popular summer for the program. "The concert was as big as I have ever seen. I'd think there were about 9,000 people in attendance," said Mike Fleming, Santa Clarita's arts and events supervisor. "Three of the soccer fields were completely filled and normally only about ...
