Review: 'The Book of Eli'

I'm at a loss for words, so let me say these right away: "The Book of Eli" is very watchable. You won't be sorry you went. It grips your attention, and then at the end throws in several WTF! moments, which are a bonus. They make everything in the entire movie impossible and incomprehensible - but, hey, WTF.

Review: 'The Lovely Bones'

"The Lovely Bones" is a deplorable film with this message: If you're a 14-year-old girl who has been brutally raped and murdered by a serial killer, you have a lot to look forward to. You can get together in heaven with the other teenage victims of the same killer and gaze down in benevolence upon your family members as they mourn you and realize what a wonderful person you were. Sure, you miss your friends, but your fellow fatalities come dancing to greet you in a meadow of wildflowers, and how cool is that?

Andre Hollings: The taking of America

Admittedly, President Barack Obama is a man of sterling qualities. He has a temperament and charm befitting one probed by the glare of history's contemplation; an intellect suited to the complexities of a seamless 21st century world; and a big-speech eloquence worthy of the historian's pen.

Wesley H. Avery: Homestead amounts increased by legislature

Effective Jan. 1, Assembly Bill 1046 increased California homestead exemptions by $25,000. Although this change in the law will not benefit homeowners in the case of foreclosure under a deed of trust, it will make it more difficult for credit card companies to collect the balances owed by their cardholders.

USA can fall due to greed

I honestly don't believe that Democrats and Republicans will ever sit down and compromise on anything. The simple act of governing for all of the people seems to be impossible.

Alice Khosravy: Role of government on display

Recently, the community of Santa Clarita has been buzzing over potential billboard removals and the possibility of sign ordinance changes. It began when the Metro Group, who owns the land on which the billboards in question reside, approached the city with a proposal to remove every billboard in the Metro (railroad) right-of-way, within the Soledad Canyon Road and Railroad Avenue corridors, in the center of the city. This amounts to the permanent removal of 118 billboards on 62 structures along the Metro right-of-way in exchange for a change to the current sign ordinance that would allow them to build three ...

Busting misconceptions about investor perceptions

We all know that perception often influences our decisions, yet we catch ourselves and become reminded that what we perceive isn't always what's really going on. With the constant barrage of information available in today's 24/7 world, it's important to not get caught up in the day-to-day market volatility and news headlines. That daily hype doesn't always dovetail with what Wells Fargo Advisors top strategists are observing in the financial marketplace.
