No surprise Chicago lost

It's not a great surprise that Chicago didn't get the Olympics. According to Forbes, it is the third worst of the most miserable cities in the U.S., listed as such in part due to the high rate of corruption in state and local government.

Vote for Valdes

I would like to tell you why to vote for Linda Valdes for Hart School Board on Nov. 3. Ms. Valdes is active in our community and led an effort for $300 million for funding for Castaic High. That's a lot of money for students. She has been a teacher for 12 years now. I was in her class two years ago and she's awesome! We went on class trips and she taught us lots ...

Traffic control lane

Living in Placerita Canyon is wonderful. I have never in 15 years had a problem exiting the canyon over Sierra Highway to Highway 14. But in the last two months, don't try to do it on the weekend or late at night. You will sit there forever.

Boydston the right choice

Your vote is important! Do you know about "One Valley, One Vision," - the new General Plan for the Santa Clarita Valley? We will need leadership that will do their due diligence on the new General Plan and work to protect their constituents from the proposed increased density/developments in our valley. Higher density/development will mean even more traffic congestion on our already overburdened roads. Roads in general are not keeping pace with current growth and ...

Festival disappointing

What a disappointment the Festival of the Arts was in Downtown Newhall Oct. 3-4. It's certainly not like the days when it was on Town Center Drive. As a group, we were looking forward to the event, but the caliber of artists and the staging of the event left much to be desired.

Noltemeyer owes an apology

I have just finished reading "What an 'uninformed and irresponsible' column" (The Signal, Oct. 5) written by P. Michael Freeman, Los Angeles County fire chief in response to Cam Noltemeyer's offending "Buyer beware in fire country" commentary (The Signal, Sept. 24).

Health care reform now

This is just a short letter to let you all know how important it is to have health/reform. I just came back from Scotland visiting my mom who had a stroke. I could not believe what great care she received from INS. I also have a nephew who has had Crohns disease since he was 15 years of age. He is now in his 30s and has had the best of care. They don't need ...

Kids' suspensions renew debate over zero tolerance

Waiting in line for the bus, a Pennsylvania kindergartener tells her pals she's going to shoot them with a Hello Kitty toy that makes soap bubbles. In Maryland, a 6-year-old boy pretends his fingers are a gun during a playground game of cops and robbers. In Massachusetts, a 5-year-old boy attending an after-school program makes a gun out of Legos and points it at other students while "simulating the sound of gunfire," as one school official put it.
