Abusing majority rule

Philosophically, Democrats have embraced the protection of minorities. This is something that Carole Lutness ("Majority rules in a democracy," Oct. 13) seemingly has overlooked. She laments the fact a simple majority in Sacramento's legislature cannot increase taxes; it takes a two-thirds majority. She advocates a simple majority rule and then claims she speaks for all of us. She doesn't speak for me.

As a product of the William S. Hart School District (Hart High Class of '02), I have never recalled spending an entire class period discussing the accomplishments of Ceser Chavez, Christopher Columbus or even Martin Luther King Jr. on their respective days. This has always been taught in our textbooks, whether mentioned in a section or a whole chapter devoted to the person.
