Our View - Vote 'yes' for westside annexation

Voters in West Ranch, Castaic and Tesoro del Valle will make an important decision Nov. 3, perhaps the most important decision anyone in the Santa Clarita Valley has been asked to make since 1987, when local residents formed their own city.

Tony Strickland - We must protect our state's businesses

Owning and operating your own business has never been easy. Start-up capital, office space, equipment, employees, payroll, fierce competition and endless paperwork mean never resting as an owner of a small business. And yet, 99.2 percent of the businesses in California fall into the category of "small" and employ more than half of our state's workforce.

Tim Myers - The happy warriors in the CSU system

During the lean times of the Great Recession we get used to certain images: The sad sign of the foreclosure notice on the vacant house. A closure notice on a factory that once made cars. Regarding ("Opt-out disbelief," Sept. 20) Linda Storli-Koontz's not being able to "imagine parents opting their high school students out of hearing" President Barack Obama's speech to students: It wouldn't have happened if Obama's Department of Education hadn't sent a "lesson plan" directly to schools asking students to write an essay on "how can I help President Obama."

Leon Worden - Local control is within your reach

Eleven million dollars. By Los Angeles County's own admission, that's how much "extra" tax money the residents and businesses of West Ranch, Castaic and Tesoro del Valle are sending to downtown Los Angeles that isn't coming back to them in the form of services. That's not how much money they're taxed. It's how much more they're taxed every year than they are getting back. Again by the county's own admission, the county spent just $22 ...
