Last week my column addressed three common IRA mistakes. This column will address another three by addressing beneficiary designations (or the lack thereof) that can have drastic effects on your IRA and protecting those assets for heirs. n Failing to review and update beneficiary designation forms. Whoever is named on an IRA beneficiary form is entitled to receive the assets. IRA owners should review their beneficiary designations at least annually or upon any ...
Dear ladies and gentlemen concerned over the imminent start-up of the Monticello Preparatory School in Hasley Canyon:
We understand that the city wants to keep children safe when they go to the park. When we went to Seco Park, we discovered that our favorite slide, the Robot Slide, was surrounded by bars, preventing us from playing on it. We all liked the Robot Slide and we have played on it since we were little. Our idea is that the city should make a "safe" replica so that we can play on it. ...

I'm usually not one for conspiracies, but the evidence shows that Southern California Edison and the California Public Utilities Commission are in cahoots to destroy the visual landscape of Santa Clarita Valley.
Long before I began working at the SCV Senior Center in July, I knew that it was a "magical" place, truly "Support and Friendship Central" for hundreds of Santa Clarita Valley seniors. Then I learned they had some really interesting job openings - and I was immediately hooked.
Question: How can one get approval for a 110-student private school in a converted six-bedroom house in Castaic in four to five months without notifying the neighbors or the quisling town council?
The Santa Clara River is a part of of Santa Clarita in more ways than one. The implications from Barack Obama's condemnation of John McCain's not knowing how many houses he owns are quite disturbing.

California is in trouble. Our deficit is enormous. We need to solve the budget issue, and we need to do it now.
I recently spoke on the phone with the fraud section at Air Tran Airlines. It seems someone is sending bogus e-mails with a virus attachment, claming that your Mastercard or Visa account has been charged ($600.87 in my case) for the online purchase of Air Tran or Continental Airline tickets. Do not open the attachment. The issue is just a virus ment to kill computers, possibly politically motivated. Talk about dirty tricks!
As much as I appreciate and respect my third graders' responses when I ask them about their future careers and they provide me with ... firefighter, police officer, teacher, professional basketball player, veterinarian, movie star and president, I know that their minds will likely change several times throughout their school years.
America's in crisis. With an out-of-control national budget deficit, plummeting support from many countries, a U.S. dollar with Third World-country clout, a war on terrorism that is costly and seemingly endless, a government that has at its core pork-barrel spending - is it any wonder we are in the mess we're in?
It's an honor to be selected to attend either of the week-long summer leadership sessions held at the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis or the United States Military Academy at West Point. But being selected for both is nearly unheard of.
The new requirements for No Child Left Behind waivers from the Department of Education have some bad news for America's teachers.
Republicans have largely squandered an August that should have been spent preparing the American people for a showdown with Democrats over the president's health care law.
This summer, the Santa Clarita Valley Chamber of Commerce will host the third annual Patriot Luncheon on July 11 at the Hyatt Regency Valencia.
Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich will address the Santa Clarita Valley business and community leaders on May 1 at the fifth annual State of the County Luncheon.
We all know that perception often influences our decisions, yet we catch ourselves and become reminded that what we perceive isn't always what's really going on. With the constant barrage of information available in today's 24/7 world, it's important to not get caught up in the day-to-day market volatility and news headlines. That daily hype doesn't always dovetail with what Wells Fargo Advisors top strategists are observing in the financial marketplace.
