Beware of activist judges in November

The least-known and most-ignored part of your midterm election ballot is the section on judges. If you stop and ponder the importance of these elected judgeships, you might agree with me when I say this part of your ballot is absolutely vital.

Call for student board-member applications

Local high school seniors in good academic standing are invited to apply to become a student member of the State Board of Education. Those interested in applying must be available at least two consecutive school days every other month to attend regular State Board of Education meetings, which are usually in Sacramento. Students must also make time to study agenda materials and attend selected advisory-group meetings, student meetings, workshops and conferences.

Identity of charred woman remains unknown

The identity a woman found burned in Castaic earlier this week was still unknown on Thursday after an autopsy was performed on her body, coroner's officials said. The woman's body was discovered Monday while firefighters were putting out a brush fire off Templin Highway a few yards east of Interstate 5. Detectives from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Homicide Bureau are investigating the case.
