Steve Lunetta: My 2010 Christmas wish list

Ever notice that Christmas starts earlier each year? I noticed back in the second week of October that Home Depot already had the blow-up Santa snow globes and the creepy wicker reindeer out for sale.

Ban on plastic bags is just common sense

Again, we are hearing the "ban the plastic bag" chant. The problem seems to have fallen by the wayside, since we can see how the freeways are littered with them and the little darlings are left for dead in parks and public places.

Goodbye and thanks to the local Do it Center

When I moved here in 1981, there were two "big" hardware stores: Builders Emporium and the Do it Center (known then as Neiman Reed Lumber City). Then came the "bigger box" hardware stores. The Emporium closed about 10 years ago.

Cancer Gave Me A Fresh Set Of Eyes And Reawakened My Spirit

Cancer is not always a death sentence but an invitation to live, a wake-up call to be present in the moment, a permit to love without holding back, a chance to forgive, a reason to be accepting of all people, and an order to slow down to take time to really see and smell the flowers.

Extraordinary Moments

Have you have ever had an extraordinary moment of any kind that really struck you because of the coincidence or surprise that it presented, or perhaps an unusually realistic dream you experienced, or even an instinct – that little voice in your head – that you listened to and it paid off?

David Hegg: We need to change perspective

While I was not yet living when it was fought, World War II has shaped so much of the world in which I have lived. It framed the whole idea of valor and courage and sacrificial service. Soldier and civilian were on the same team, working for a common goal, with mutual respect and honor.

My Dad - Henry John William Mawhood

All his life he moaned and groaned about the unfairness of it. He'd been promised a Military Medal, outranked only by the Victoria Cross, the highest award that could be achieved. Well, he'd certainly earned it as a dispatch rider.

UPDATE: 7 dead in drive-by shooting near UC Santa Barbara

GOLETA, Calif. (AP) - The son of a Hollywood director stabbed three men to death in his apartment, gunned down two women outside a sorority and killed a sixth person in a rampage that was foreshadowed by a chilling Internet video in which he vowed to his victims that he would "take great pleasure in slaughtering all of you."
