It is fair to say that I was extremely disappointed in the results of the recent local election to fill two empty seats on the Santa Clarita City Council.
More and more present and future retirees are finding that the traditional idea of retirement is passé. What's more, there's plenty of evidence that keeping your hand in the game, or even finding a new calling, will yield a longer, healthier and happier latter stage of your life. And given rising health care costs, that adult child who suddenly has returned home or the aging parent who needs care, working a little longer may well be as much a need as a want.

I couldn't agree more with Dave McEachern (April 15). We can do more for our gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender students. Indeed, we should have no tolerance for bullying and name-calling.
Like many California girls, Candy is blonde, buff and beautiful. All she needs now is a place to strut her stuff.
The Chivas USA soccer team showed its winning talents when 10 players from the team joined the Michael Hoefflin Foundation for Children's Cancer's ninth annual Benefit Dinner in late March. The dinner, held at the Valencia Hyatt, raised more than $44,000 to support the foundation's work with children and families touched by pediatric cancer in the Santa Clarita Valley and surrounding valleys.
Santa Clarita Valley Appreciation Days 2008 will be held at Six Flags Hurricane Harbor on May 3 and 4. The Valencia theme park makes 4,000 tickets to Hurricane Harbor available to schools and non-profit organizations at $3 each, which the organizations sell to the public at $10 each.

My 4-year-old son is very excited about Earth Day on Tuesday. Yup, Earth Day, the annual celebration of our planet during which Americans promote awareness and appreciation for the environment. My wife and I told our boy about Earth Day, and he seems more excited about cleaning up beaches and recycling than he's been about opening presents on Christmas morning or trick-or-treating on Halloween night.
