It is truly summer in the SCV, hot, hotter and hottest! As my good friend Richard Green tells everyone, "The blast furnace that is the SCV summer is not a good time for planting trees, or much of anything else!" Can you believe that school starts for most SCV kids in less than a month?
I've always considered the Fourth of July to be the demarcation line for the year. Half the year is gone, just half the year remains. I hope everyone is enjoying a wonderful summer of fun. Time to relax, enjoy and take a break!
It's been a crazy June! Where was the gloom? Well, we are past the summer solstice (June 21) with the longest day of the year - now each day will start to get shorter until winter solstice (Dec. 21).
Have you hugged your father today? Did you call? Send a card? Write a note? Today's the day to honor the many dandy dads in the SCV. My dad taught me to drive, taught me which wild plants that were safe to eat, taught me to think for myself, taught me how to ride a horse and taught me about honor. I miss him.
Where's the June gloom? It seems to me that the weather for the SCV Boys & Girls Club Auction is historically "warm!"

May is gone and June has arrived, bringing graduations, Father's Day and the countdown to Fourth of July. I have a wedding anniversary this month, too. It's hard for me to comprehend that I've been married 30-plus years!
Kudos to good citizens Poole and Shaffery
I'm glad those few days of scorching weather are behind us! However, I know that August will bring those triple digits back in full force, but until then, I'm enjoying this rainy, cool weather. Ahhh!
While it seems that summer has arrived with guns a-blazing in the SCV, we were fortunate to have the best weather I've ever experienced for Taste of the Town on May 4. Let's hope that June gloom returns ASAP!

My favorite time of the year is when the yuccas are in bloom - and blooming they are, right now. Those big, fluffy white flowers look like popcorn on a stick. I find them beautiful and fascinating.

The eighth annual Our Lady of Perpetual Help Tea and Garden Tour on April 27 brought guests to the backyard of Sally Coss' beautiful Valencia home to enjoy high tea and spectacular beauty.
Today's your last chance to saddle up and mosey on over to Melody Ranch for the annual Cowboy Festival - the best part of living in the great SCV! Have some Cowboy Cobbler from the Cowboy Cultural Committee (cooked on coals in a Dutch oven) and listen to some of the finest entertainment west of the Rio Grande!
It was "Eye of the Tiger" meets "Million Dollar Babes" at the 2008 Miss Santa Clarita Valley Scholarship Program held Sunday at the Hyatt Valencia. The dual boxing-themed pageants featured a total of nearly 60 competitors seeking to TKO the competition and seize one of the 20 major titles up for grabs.

April is a funny month for me - on one hand, it is tax month (both property taxes and federal and state income taxes are due) on the other hand, the Cowboy Festival rides into town during the last weekend of the month. As anyone who has read this column for any length of time knows, the Cowboy Festival is my favorite event of the year! So mosey on over to Melody Ranch the weekend of April 26-27 for some authentic cowboy grub, shopping and great Western music. For more information visit www.cowboyfestival.org.
