I don't know about you, but for me, there is something very down-home comforting about living in a town where a new floating restroom is front-page news - as it was this past Wednesday, regarding the replacement john for our Castaic Lake.
It's mid-March, and the calendar and the warm days we had recently may be making you think it's time to do your spring planting.
Well, St. Patrick's Day is on a Saturday this year - tomorrow, in case you haven't been paying attention. That being the case, celebrations will naturally be larger and longer and you'll need to be careful not to overdo it. Here are the local St. Patrick's Day happenings, as well as those big ones in the greater L.A. area. Enjoy and be safe.
So, tomorrow is St. Patrick's Day. Sure and begorrah. But, in case you haven't noticed, our celebrations of the holiday here in the SCV pale by comparison to other U.S. cities. Take Chicago, for example. Those folks take their St. Patrick's Day celebrating seriously, with a massive parade and, I hear, green beer sold on every street corner. Enforcing the celebration there this year will be a stepped up campaign of arrests for public sobriety. ...
Spring is always energizing, and the season often gets us motivated to sweep out the cobwebs and brighten things in our homes.
It's been nearly two years since Escape last visited Bella Cucina and, in that time, there have been a few changes. Most notably, the large outdoor patio is now shaded and has plastic roll-down windows to block the breeze, yet still allow the beautiful view to be seen. It's the perfect place for a summer sundown dinner or a large party. The patio also has cooling fans, a television and when, things are busy, its own bar.
So, OK, we've already missed some of the concerts at the big-name venues in town this year. But there's a whole lot of music still to come in 2012. And, since the world will end in December, why not spend all your extra cash on seeing the major artists perform. That way you can hold it over your friends until we all go up in smoke.

On Sunday, March 11, the Santa Clarita Valley Historical Society will host a tour of the site of the St. Francis Dam disaster in San Francisquito Canyon. The dam break is the second-worst natural disaster in the state of California: The failure of the St. Francis Dam, on March 12, 1928, killed more than 450 people, leveled farms and homesteads, destroyed property and livestock, and changed the way dam safety was addressed forever.
So, OK, daylight saving time begins Sunday at 2 a.m. And we'll be "saving" a little more daylight, a little more sunshine, each day - you know, just in time for the sun to fry us all with protons and X-rays.
So, you've got to go. Maybe your employer is transferring you out of town, or maybe you can't make the monthly payments on your home and you are in default or heading toward it rapidly.
You come in for the delicious and well-priced food, of course. But you also come in to see your "family." And beyond that, you can take away a little daily inspiration when you need it. The food and the family are a combination that has made Cathy's Delicatessen Restaurant in Newhall a tradition for 12 years (and, actually, long before that, when Cathy's was Danny's). And the spiritual uplift is an additional benefit offered since ...
