Taking America on the road
There are many ways in which seniors keep themselves active and "plugged in," but Valencia resident Molly Hodson, 70, seems to be taking things about as far as they can go. A Habitat for Humanity team leader for 17 years, she recently returned from yet another Habitat for Humanity homebuilding trip, this time to Buenos Aires, Argentina - where she led a group of 13 volunteers, including her granddaughter, Kayla Hodson, 17, a Hart High School senior.
‘Play Dates’ is funny stuff
You know you've done it. At least once in your life, and hopefully only in early grade school, you slipped someone of romantic interest one of those notes with a heart on it that read, "Will you be my girlfriend (or boyfriend)?" and had two check boxes, one for "Yes" and one for "No." And if your intended filled in her or his own box with "Maybe," well, it was just maddening.
The intoxication of hyphenation
Though I was sorely tempted to continue with malapropisms this week (unintentional use of the wrong word), as there are so many of them popping up out there all the time, I will limit myself to the one I came across that tempted me.

Now, I don't credit fortune cookies with any more power to predict the future than I do horoscopes. However, I always enjoy reading both, if only to see just how far off the mark they are, or just how vague they can be … you know, vague enough so that those fools of us who read them might imagine there is some truth there and actually think they were written by wise wizards in tune with the universal vibration.

YOUth Sports Festival
This year's annual Celebrating YOUth Sports Festival will be held tomorrow, Saturday, Aug. 18, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Santa Clarita Sports Complex at 20870 Centre Pointe Parkway, Saugus, CA 91350. Wings Over Camarillo
This Saturday and Sunday the popular Wings Over Camarillo air show returns to Camarillo Airport, bringing with it a thrilling and educational outing for the whole family. The expanded flight demonstration features many popular aerobatic routines with more than 80 aircraft, including vintage planes, experimental planes and WW II fighters, bombers, trainers and transports. Ground displays will include a C-130 transport, P-3C Orion, NASA F-18 and the Sonic Boom F-16 Flight Simulator.

When it comes time to select trees for their landscaping, many SCV homeowners overlook one of the best choices: the palm. According to Richard Green of Green Landscape Nursery in Saugus, in general, palms are slow growing, drought tolerant and low maintenance, and they have a root "ball" that usually doesn't cause problems with sidewalks and retaining walls and such.
In defense of microwaving underwear
"Man sets fire to home by microwaving undies" was the headline that caught my eye the other day. I mean, you couldn't make this stuff up, right?
