Valencia soccer makes mess of playoff picture

Golden Valley held its Senior Day on Tuesday. Valencia was not a gracious guest. The Vikings blanked Golden Valley 4-0, which sets up a huge showdown Thursday between the Grizzlies (8-5-4, 3-3-3) and West Ranch. The game will likely determine who earns the third and final playoff spot in the Foothill League. Golden Valley head coach Phil Lopez hopes his team is more ready to play. "Unfortunately, we picked the worst day to have our ...

Santa Clarita to get WPSL team

Why does the Santa Clarita Valley need a Women's Premier Soccer League team? Just ask team manager Pat Riggins about his chance encounter with former Canyon High and University of Southern California standout Nini Loucks. "I ran into Nini Loucks at the (Santa Clarita) Soccer Center," Riggins said. "She said that when my daughter mentioned the team to her she was really surprised in a pleasant way. We have a lot of talent in the ...

Valencia steps on gas late

For most of the game against Hart Tuesday, Valencia looked sluggish. When the game was truly in the balance, Valencia looked like its normal self. Down by one midway through the fourth quarter, the Vikings went on a 15-7 run to close the game and earn a 62-53 Foothill League victory over Hart. By forcing misses on defense, Valencia (18-5, 5-2) pushed the tempo and created high-percentage shots in transition to pull away. The first ...

Hart keeps rolling

Valencia has struggled to keep leads lately. With the way Hart played in the second half Tuesday, it didn't matter. Hart came out fired up after halftime and closed the third quarter on a 17-2 run to beat Valencia 75-65 in a chippy game and sweep the regular season series with its Foothill League rival. Valencia held a 45-38 lead midway through the third quarter when Hart sprung ahead, and the Indians (16-8, 5-2) turned ...

Connected success

The Santa Clarita Christian girls soccer team is having a milestone season - thanks in large part to Kayla Gale's milestone accomplishment. The junior striker surpassed the 50-goal mark for her career by scoring three goals in a victory over AGBU High School of Pasadena in mid-January. Gale currently sits with 59 career goals, and Santa Clarita Christian is 14-2-1 overall and a lock to finish with the first winning record in the program's history.

Big returns

Starla Wright makes a huge difference for the Valencia girls basketball team. If you want proof, just ask Canyon. Wright scored 27 points in her first game back after suffering a concussion 12 days ago, leading the Vikings to a 70-57 victory over the Cowboys Tuesday at Valencia High School. "She was huge," said Valencia head coach Jerry Mike. "She scores, but she pressures the ball on the press and sets up her teammates, too. ...

Vikings take off, never look back

The inability to play with a lead has cost Valencia lately. The Vikings weren't about to let it happen again. Valencia went on an 11-0 run to start the game and fended off Canyon 57-46 Tuesday at Valencia High School. The two teams traded baskets for most of the game after Valencia's hot start, but the Vikings (14-7, 2-3) squashed any run that Canyon tried to generate. "That's what we talked about, keep pushing and ...

Defensive edge

The Golden Valley Grizzlies have heard the rap. They have to outscore everyone. They can't play defense. It sure didn't look that way in the second half against Valencia.

West Ranch finishes Hart

Given how West Ranch has had trouble scoring in Foothill League play, Friday's game against Hart must have felt like a huge sigh of relief.
