Canyon’s Hale nominated for national honor
When McDonald's released its California nominations for its All-American High School Basketball Team Wednesday, there was one surprise name from the Santa Clarita Valley. Ariel Hale, a senior power forward from Canyon, was one of 35 girls from across the state nominated.
First-day fuel
There was a lot of motivation going around in the Foothill League after The Signal's Winter Sports Previews, which ran from Saturday through Tuesday. We're not taking credit for anything, but certainly those editions rubbed some local athletes the wrong way.
Canyon finds inspiration
The Canyon boys soccer team had a sack full of motivation coming into its league opener at West Ranch High. In typical fashion, Cowboys head coach Khris Savage took every opportunity to use it.
The Detour
The road to a Foothill League championship in girls basketball has gone through Newhall Avenue. Hart High has won seven straight titles, including a share of the crown last year with Saugus.
The Roadblock
Hart High head basketball coach Zach Koebel goes one-on-one with a select few of his players at practice. Megan Ford, now a center at Cal Poly Pomona, was one of his favorites last year in his first season leading the Indians.

Teams are going to key on a couple of Valencia girls basketball varsity veterans this season.

Former Indian named Player of Week Hart High graduate Megan Ford was named Wilson California Collegiate Athletic Association Women's Basketball Player of the Week for the week of December 29 - January 3. Ford, a freshman center at NCAA Division II Cal Poly Pomona, averaged 18 points and 9.5 rebounds in a pair of games during the week.
