Longshore bound for Miami

It appears that Canyon graduate Nate Longshore does have a destination. According to various media reports, including one from the San Francisco Chronicle, the former Cal quarterback will try out for the Miami Dolphins at their rookie training camp. A message to Longshore was not returned, but a family source confirmed that he is flying to Miami today. Longshore played in all 13 games in 2008 for Cal, throwing for 1,051 yards with 10 touchdowns ...

'Cats wheels are in motion

Collin Wheeler may have just golfed himself into the CIF playoffs. What he definitely did was put his West Ranch team in a better position. The 2007 Newhall Land Cup champion shot a co-medalist round of 3-under 69, with Valencia's Jonathan Chang, at TPC Valencia Tuesday. The Wildcats as a team posted a 375, 10 strokes better than Valencia, which it came into the Newhall Land Cup, the Foothill League's fifth match, tied with for ...

Morales signs with Cardinals

The thought of catching passes from a possible future hall of famer in Kurt Warner and alongside two of the NFL's top receivers in Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Boldin has 2005 Valencia High graduate Shane Morales chomping at the bit. Morales signed a free agent deal with the defending NFC champion Arizona Cardinals Sunday night and will report to rookie training camp Thursday.

Vikes show it’s far from over

It's a brand new ball game. Valencia put some emphasis on its Foothill League golf win, out-distancing West Ranch 364-378. The victory broke West Ranch's nine-match Foothill League winning streak and unofficially put the Vikings into a tie for first place. "I was so proud of my team," said Valencia golfer Max Homa, who shot a medalist performance of 5-under 66 at Robinson Ranch Thursday. "We walked out, the five us, I was carrying (teammate) ...

Ending the doubt

In nearly every direction, Valencia pitcher Carly Mortensen had obstacles around her. Large shadows from the past hovering over her. A giant in the circle on the other side. And base runners surrounding her in the bottom of the seventh inning. The shadows of past Valencia pitching greats, the giant - Hart's Destiny Rodino - and the base runners couldn't get to her though as the freshman pitcher led Valencia to a 4-2 win over ...

Hart, Valencia look up to No. 1

Pollsters believe Hart is a good softball team. They also feel that defending CIF-Southern Section Division I champion Valencia is solid. But they also seem to think that Norco's a little bit better. In the latest Division I poll, Norco leapfrogged Hart for the No. 1 ranking, as Mater Dei tumbled to No.4. That put Hart and Valencia at Nos. 2 and 3 respectively. Like Hart and Valencia, Norco's a hefty name in the Southern ...

Bauer awarded national honor

Trevor Bauer's almost unbelievable ascension continues. The Hart High graduate, who earned enough credits to leave the school early and enroll at UCLA in January, has pitched his way to Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week honors. "Definitely a great honor," Bauer said. "In a sense I don't deserve it. It doesn't seem like I'm worthy." Bauer pitched a one-hit shutout April 18 in a 13-0 victory for his UCLA Bruins over Washington. The ...

Closer just not good enough

Close makes Valencia golfer Max Homa sick. But it's the best word choice that applies to his Vikings in respect to Foothill League play. Valencia shot a team score of 391 Tuesday at Valencia Country club, one stroke off match No. 3 winner West Ranch. At the end of the Foothill golf season, each team gets to throw out its worst score. West Ranch has a 26-stroke lead over the Vikings. But Valencia is one ...

West Ranch baseball picks up first Foothill League win of 2013

Regardless of how West Ranch Wildcats baseball got the win, the important thing is it got the win. The Wildcats are now on the board in Foothill League play after a 10-1 win over the Golden Valley Grizzlies on Wednesday at Golden Valley High. "It's a win and we needed to have one," said West Ranch head coach Casey Burrill. "If we want to find ourselves at the end of the season competing for a ...
