The Santa Clarita Valley School Food Services Agency and the United States Department of Agriculture are partnering this summer to provide free meals to children in the Santa Clarita Valley.

The partnership, called the 2013 Summer Meal Program, is already up and running and will last until mid-August, according to a news release from the School Food Services Agency.

The effort is important, according to the agency, because free and reduced school lunches are unavailable during summer.

Breakfast and lunch will be offered free of charge to children under 18 between the hours of 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. at locations around the city.

The free meals will be provided at eight locations:

• Newhall Boys and Girls Club at 24909 Newhall Ave. between June 17 and Aug. 12

• Val Verde Youth Activity League at 30300 Arlington Street between June 3 and Aug. 13

• Leona Cox Elementary School at 18643 Oakmoor Street in Canyon Country between June 24 and July 19

• Cedarcreek Elementary School at 27792 Camp Plenty Road in Canyon Country between July 8 and July 26

• SCV Boys and Girls Club at 19425 Stillmore Street in Canyon Country between June 18 and Aug. 14

• City of Santa Clarita Community Center at 22421 Market Street in Newhall between June 17 and Aug. 9

• Valley View Elementary School at 19414 Sierra Estates Drive in Santa Clarita between June 24 and July 19

• Rio Vista Elementary at 20417 Cedarcreek Street in Canyon Country between July 8 and July 26

Interested parents will need to register their children to take advantage of the meals. For more information, contact the SCV School Food Services Agency at 661-295-1574, extension 103.
