Parents looking for assistance in raising their teens are invited to attend the first Hart Parent Academy, scheduled from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 18, in the Hart Auditorium.

The program is sponsored by Hart High School and the Los Angeles County Commission on Human Relations and is open to parents throughout the community, whether or not they have students at Hart High.

The evening will include an opening address by Dan Williams from Destiny Foundation, and a selection of nine workshops from which parents can choose three 30-minute sessions.

Workshops will include such topics as developing a Parent Center; "A-G" requirements for enrollment in a University of California, Internet safety, bully prevention strategies, teen development, college planning, living with teens, teen support from ACTION, and a college panel.

"This is a great example of schools and the community working together for the benefit of parents and students," explained Hart Principal Collyn Nielsen. "We are using our experts on campus as well as local community expertise to help our parents navigate through those years of raising teenagers. This is a great opportunity for parents to receive very important, very relevant information at no cost to them or the school."

Parents can enroll in the Academy by sending an e-mail to or leaving a message at 259-7575, extension 120. Reservations should include the name of those attending, a cell phone contact number, and the name of the three sessions preferred.
