Two vacant seats are up for grabs on the Castaic Area Town Council during a July special election, but only a few weeks remain for those who want to run.

The council serves as an advisory body, helping Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich craft policy on matters that affect residents in the unincorporated Castaic and Val Verde areas of Los Angeles County.

Elected council members represent certain regions of the areas. The two seats that will be filled after the July 20 special election are to represent Region 1, encompassing Live Oak, North Bluffs, Hillcrest Park, Hasley Hills and the Valencia Commerce Center; and Region 5, which includes Double C Ranch, Hidden Lake, Stonegate, Northlake and regions east of Interstate 5 and north of Lake Hughes Road.

Those interested in throwing their names into the ring must be at least 18 years old, have been a resident of Castaic for at least one year and be a registered voter within the boundaries of the region they hope to represent.

Those elected in July will serve until November 2014, according to current Town Council President Flo Lawrence.

“Both of the people who resigned (from the council) had terms that ran through November 2014,” Lawrence said Friday.

After that, those elected in July will have the option of running for a full, four-year term in November 2014, according to Lawrence.

Council members typically meet twice a month, once to set the monthly agenda and the second in a town hall format. The first meeting is typically held on the first Tuesday of each month while the second is usually held the third Wednesday of each month.

Those interested in becoming a candidate must send a notification email to Lawrence at Prospective candidates must also deliver a letter specifying their qualifications for the position and the region of Castaic they live in, along with a $50 filing fee.

The letter and the fee can be personally delivered to Lawrence or mailed to the council at P.O. Box 325, Castaic, 91310. Materials must be delivered or postmarked by July 13.

The Town Council special election will be held from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. July 20 at the Castaic Chamber of Commerce, 31744 Castaic Road, Suite 103.
