FRESNO, Calif. (AP) — Fresno's fire chief has pleaded not guilty to assault and other charges stemming from an alleged domestic dispute.

The Fresno Bee reports that James Robert Brown entered the plea on Thursday. He is facing a six-count complaint that also includes charges of making threats and corporal injury.

Authorities say Brown knocked his wife to the ground, choked another family member and had to be pepper-sprayed during the June 12 incident at his home. His wife, Beth Brown, is also a Fresno city official.

The 50-year-old Brown was flanked by his wife and four sons during his court appearance. A judge allowed him to remain at home.
