Santa Clarita Valley residents are invited to family movie time at William S. Hart Regional Park starting this Friday with outdoor movies shown on a giant screen free of charge.

Twice a month through August, “Movies at the Park” will offer animated features on a 24-by-40 foot inflatable screen. Residents are invited to bring picnic dinners, lawn chairs and a blanket, though food concessions will also be available.

The movie series kicks off with “Madagascar 3” followed by four other G- and PG-rated animated films. Admission is free.

“The most important thing is to let the people know to bring their own chairs and blankets,” said park Superintendent Norman Phillips.

Recreation Services Supervisor Frank Hoffman praised the Friends of Hart Park for helping organize the event.

It all begins at 7 p.m. Friday with light entertainment featuring the Art of Hula and Tahitian dance classes before the movie begins at twilight.

Movies in the Park is not the only new feature at the park this summer. Several one-shot attractions are scheduled, including a saxophone concert this Sunday and rattlesnake avoidance training in July.

“This is going to be a great summer at Hart Park,” said Hoffman.

“We want to reach all folks and all ages.”

The park will remain open during construction of the Newhall Roundabout that begins in July.

The park opens at sunrise this summer, and office hours are Monday through Saturday 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
