Assemblyman Scott Wilk has selected Vietnam Veteran R.J. Kelly to represent the 38th Assembly District during the "2013 Veterans Recognition Ceremony" in Sacramento.

Assemblyman Scott Wilk, R-Santa Clarita, announced Thursday he has named Santa Clarita Valley resident R.J. Kelly as his district representative during the “2013 Veterans Recognition Ceremony” in Sacramento.

Wilk’s Assembly district encompasses most of the Santa Clarita Valley, along with Simi Valley and portions of the San Fernando Valley.

Kelly, a veteran of the Vietnam War and current board member for the Castaic Lake Water Agency, joined the United States Marines shortly after graduating from El Monte High School in 1966, according to a news release from Wilk’s office.

According to that release, Kelly was stationed in Vietnam in 1967 and later went on to earn a Purple Heart, a medal given out to those who are wounded or killed in the line of duty.

“It gives me great pleasure to honor R.J. for his dedication and service to our country,” said Wilk in a news release.

“Our service men and women are the absolute backbone of our country and I’m proud R.J. Kelly is a member of our community.”

Since his retirement from the Marines, Kelly has been an active resident of the Santa Clarita Valley, participating in groups such as the Veterans of Foreign Wars, among others.
