Zonta Club of Santa Clarita Valley transitioned from the 2012-13 year to 2013-14 in its own unique fashion during the recent installation dinner.

The theme, kept as a closely-held secret until the actual event, was "Life’s a Beach!" in tribute to incoming President Laura Peckham’s favorite pastime.

Table decorations of sand, buckets and other beach toys transformed a section of the Valencia Hyatt’s Grand Ballroom into a beach setting, and chairs draped with beach towels completed the colorful setting.

The early evening was focused on outgoing President Chris Miller and her board, with presentations of honoraria and a stirring "farewell" speech by Miller.

Zontian of the Year winner Cheryl Wasserman was announced, even though the original presentation was made at the May business meeting since Cheryl was out of town attending her mother’s 90th birthday party at the time of installation.

After dinner, the club’s past presidents drew laughter and applause as they entered the room complete with beach balls, googly-eyed sunglasses and beach wear.

Marilyn Hackett and Cindy Kittle collaborated on a fun-filled series of Beach Boys songs, with lyrics altered to fit the Zonta occasion.

Past Zonta International President Dianne Curtis frolicked with a beach ball behind the two.

Zonta International Director Laura Peters then installed President Laura and her board: Karen Maleck-Whiteley, president-elect; Cherise Moore, first vice president/programs; Cheryl Hawkins, second vice president/membership; Barbara Meyer, treasurer; and Jorja Harris, recording secretary.

Each received a bucket of toys which represented tools to use in her new position.

"Your character and professionalism make me proud to be associated with you," said Peckham.

She noted a survey conducted at brainstorming which made it clear that relationships and a focus on service were the most important aspects of participation in Zonta for the majority of club members.

Additional newly installed directors include Cheryl Wasserman, Michelle Woodfork, Ronnie Erickson, DaAnne Smith and Judy Penman. Chris Miller serves on the board as immediate past president, and the 2013-14 Nominating Committee members are Pat Willett, Danise Davis and JoAnne Lindsey.

Zonta International Director Peters also installed the Zonta Foundation trustees: Dianne Curtis, Sharon Langenbeck, Cheryl Wasserman and Karen Maleck-Whiteley, serving from 2013 to 2015.

Foundation directors serving terms which end in May 2014 include Lois Bauccio, Mary Ree, Vicki Oren, Phyllis Walker and Laura Peckham (as club president).

The installation was chaired by Jo Ann Rodriguez as immediate past president, and organized by a committee of all the club’s former presidents.

The Zonta Club of SCV is a member of Zonta International, an organization with more than 30,000 members belonging to more than 1,200 Zonta clubs in 67 countries and geographical areas.

Zonta International has consultative status with the United Nations and is the means by which members participate in service projects around the world.
