A 20-year-Canyon Country man who was stabbed in the abdomen a month ago was recovering from his injuries, a lead investigator said Monday, the same day his alleged assailant waived his right to a speedy trial.

Steven Markarian, 19, of Canyon Country was charged with attempted murder in the stabbing of Aaron Matute. The stabbing occurred May 21 in the River Park Apartment complex in the 27000 block of Sara Street near Chelsea Way in Canyon Country.

Investigators in the case say the life-threatening attack was believed to be gang related.

“He’s recovering and doing fine,” Sgt. Dean Currie said Monday of Matute. Asked how many times Matute was stabbed, Currie said: “It’ll all come out at the trial.”

Charged with attempted murder, Markarian appeared briefly Monday in San Fernando Superior Court, where he waived his right to a speedy preliminary hearing and agreed, instead, to have it held in August.

During that hearing, prosecutors will present evidence in the case, and the defense can respond, after which the judge will decide if the case should go to trial.

Markarian is being held in the North County Correctional Facility at the Pitchess Detention Center with bail set at $1.09 million.

On May 24, he entered a plea of not guilty to the felony charge against him.
