The cheerleaders of William S. Hart High School recently proved again why they are winners on and off the field. The cheer squad, which is made up of varsity, junior varsity and freshmen cheer leaders, recently completed a four month Cell Phones for Soldiers drive.

"We collected 316 phones from our four month drive. Last year we collected 140 so we are very happy to turn in the 316 phones so that our soldiers overseas can be given calling cards to phone home. It is such a great cause," said Emily Chiominto, publicity chairwoman of the Hart Cheer Spirit Club. "We had a lot of help and the community came forward and donated the cell phones for our soldiers."

Chiominto said the cheerleaders, who won their first two competitions and placed second in their third competitions have worked hard to give back to the community.

"They cheered on the Special Olympic athletes at their cycling event, cheered on the football players at the city's football kick off and hosted a booth at A Day for Kids," she said. "The girls have made cards for injured soldiers at the Walter Reed Hospital, the veterans at the West Los Angeles Veterans Hospital and directly to the soldiers serving overseas through the Blue Star Moms of Santa Clarita."

Members of the various squads include:

Varsity: Rachel Abernathy, Janelle Bongiovanni, Noelle Chadbourne, Nicole Chiominto, Mia Davis, Stephanie Harris, Andrea Harvey, Jessica Koehler, Allison Lawrence, Melinda Magallanes, Miranda Maxwell, Christine Padilla, Kaylie Santos, Cassandra Sarmiento, Alix Schwartz, Becca Talkin, Alexa Updegraft and Kali Whitehurst.

JV: Lauren Cassis, Tiana Coleman, Megan Cruz, Danielle Galdos, Kelsey Molidor and Corinne Pyle.

Freshman: Britlin Abbott, Elizabeth Arriago, Lauren Cruz, Breanne Forster, Brittani Garrison, Katie Knudsen, Kelsie Leach, Julia Mason, Michelle May, Elle Musselman, Annie Potter, Lindsey Santos, Amanda Silva, Sammy Spiegel and Chandler White.

"Our cheer advisor, Lisa Parra, was a great help to the drive along with the parents of the cheerleaders and the Hart High School administration," said Chiominto.

"The girls are also working to raise funds for a trip to Hawaii to compete in the Aloha International Spirit Championship. The cheerleaders have been very busy as they cheer at football games, school rallies and basketball games while doing work in the community. It's so good to see teenagers doing positive things."
