For the third straight day, an athlete with Santa Clarita Valley ties was involved in either the U.S. Outdoor Track and Field Championships or the U.S. Junior Championships, which are both taking place in Des Moines, Iowa this week.

On Saturday, SCV resident Allyson Felix ran her first race of the week in the 200-meter prelims.

She qualified for today’s semifinal with a time of 22.44 seconds to win her Saturday heat. Felix’s time was the No. 5 qualifying time of the 16 runners to move on.

Felix, a four-time Olympic gold medalist overall and a six-time U.S. champion in the 200, will race her semifinal heat at 12:22 p.m. Pacific Time today. If she makes it to the final, she’ll have a chance to win her seventh national title in the event final at 2:20 p.m.

Also competing today is Canyon High graduate Alysia Montaño, who will run in the 800-meter final at 1:04 p.m. Pacific Time. Montaño is seeking her fifth U.S. title in the event.

Television coverage of the U.S. Championships begins at 1 p.m. on NBC.
