Summer has arrived. Of course the real summer weather usually doesn’t arrive until September-October when the Santa Clarita Valley experiences its hottest temperatures. I can wait! Really.

Miss SCV Pageant

It may have been the longest ever Miss SCV Scholarship Pageant, but it also was the most beautiful. Not only were the contestants beautifully attired in exquisite ball gowns, the backdrops rented for the occasion gave the ladies a beautiful backdrop on which to compete.

Regional royalty

Crowned the 2013 regional royalty were: Mini Miss SCV Ella Limones, Little Miss SCV Kayla Prieto, Jr. Miss SCV Lyauna Augmon, Miss Teen SCV Hannah Hobleman, Miss SCV Kelsie Leach, Ms. SCV Kisha Eltagonde and Mrs. SCV Rachel Ward. You can see the new Miss SCV Scholarship Pageant queens and princesses in the annual SCV 4th of July Parade that begins at 9 a.m. in downtown Newhall.

Miss SCV scholarships

The young ladies who compete in the pageant earn generous scholarships when they win the regional crowns. Miss SCV earns a $5,000 scholarship, Miss Teen SCV earns a $2,500 scholarship’ Jr. Miss SCV earns a $1,000 scholarship and Little Miss SCV earns a $750 scholarship. A new title, Mini Miss SCV was added at the last minute this year and I am guessing she will earn a scholarship as well.

Miss SCV program gives back

What I like most about the Miss SCV Scholarship Program is how pageant organizers encourage the concept of community service and "giving back" to the community. It’s a message that’s important to the quality of life in the SCV. Without our emphasis on "community" I think you’d find the SCV a very different kind of place, and not one that would be as pleasant to live in! In addition to community service, the young ladies learn self-esteem, self-confidence and the importance of how to present yourself in public. These are important life skills and the young women who participate in the pageant program learn all of this and more.

Kudos to Daniel Sterkel

I would like to offer my own personal, "good citizen of the year" award to Daniel Sterkel, executive manager of Nissan of Valencia. Nissan of Valencia served as the 2013 Double Diamond Crown sponsor of the Miss SCV Scholarship Pageant, sponsoring more than 20 of the pageant’s 46 contestants. Wow! Talk about supporting SCV youth! I loved the commercial that ran during the pageant that showed all the support that Nissan of Valencia provides youth in the SCV. The folks at Nissan of Valencia obviously know the importance of community!

Good corporate citizens

Perry Kuklin, director of marketing of Lavi Industries in Valencia, told us of his companies generous match of employee donations for Oklahoma tornado relief for a total $3,175. People who have recently moved to the SCV often tell me how impressed they are with our culture of "giving back." The people of the SCV are among the most generous I’ve ever known, that goes for the business community as well!A week-long employee fundraising effort raised $1,587.58 in contributions for the cause and Lavi Industries matched each dollar, bringing the total amount raised to $3,175.16.

"We are honored to be able to help the affected families as they work to rebuild their lives and communities," said Gavriel Lavi, President and CEO for Lavi Industries.

Lavi Industries has earmarked the donation for the Salvation Army Oklahoma Tornado Relief fund. Supporters can donate online via the organization’s website, SalvationArmyUSA.org. To make a $10 donation via cellphone text the word STORM to 80888. Lavi Industries is a provider of public guidance and crowd control solutions in North America.
