Santa Clarita Christian more than held its own with some of the top prep football programs in the Southern California
At the FCA passing tournament on Saturday, the SCCS Cardinals made it to the final eight teams among 20, beating Loyola High of Los Angeles along the way on the UCLA campus.

Led by a seven-touchdown, two-interception performance from quarterback Jonathan Saavedra, SCCS went 2-3 overall in the tournament while playing in a field that included powerhouse programs like Serra of Gardena and Long Beach Poly.

“I’m looking the other teams we’re going against and saying, ‘how in the heck are we going against them?” said SCCS head coach Garrick Moss.

The highlight of the day for the Cardinals came in an 11-10 victory over Loyola in bracket play.

“We were the talk of the tournament,” Moss said.

After advancing to the final eight with the win over Loyola, SCCS lost 24-18 in overtime to Sylmar.

On the day, several Cardinals got into the action. Those included were Derek Lewis, who caught four touchdowns, and Brody DeRevere, who added two scores.

Jacob Nogle and D.J. King also played well as both receivers and on the defensive end.

In SCCS’s first three games during pool play, it lost 22-8 to Lakewood and 16-14 to Loyola before beating Torres of Los Angeles 28-10.
