Swimming is not only one of the best ways to stay cool when temperatures heat up; it is also one of the best ways to stay fit.

And now that summer is officially here, you can make plans to enjoy seasonal programming at your local city of Santa Clarita pool that will keep you cool and in shape.

The city operates six pools throughout the community, including Canyon Country, Newhall, Saugus and Valencia. It offers classes, open swim, and activities for water enthusiasts of all ages.

This summer the city anticipates more than 3,000 people will enjoy swim lessons and more than 80,000 will participate in recreational swim programs, which are available at each pool facility. And that doesn’t include all those who will enjoy lap swim, Aqua Zumba or stand-up paddle boarding, among other pool activities.

In fact, aquatic programming is so sought-after in Santa Clarita that the city increased its summer staff to include more than 120 certified lifeguards to facilitate classes and recreational swim at all pools.

So what can you do this summer at your local pool? It’s really up to you, because the programming is vast.

Perhaps you are interested in getting in shape with low-impact water exercise? The city has affordable and convenient classes to help you.

Or maybe you are looking for a water-themed event to enjoy with the kids or grandkids? We’ve got that covered as well.

The city’s pools even offer group and private lessons, swim teams, and SCUBA diving certification classes, making it easier than ever to enjoy water classes and programming right in your neighborhood.

Here’s a little more about some of the unique programming available this summer through the city’s aquatics programs.

Swim lessons: The city offers more than 400 options for swim lessons during the summer season, with openings still available.

Recreational Swim: Each city pool facility offers time to just swim, splash and play seven days a week.

Dive-in movies: Imagine your favorite movie theater on water and you have the popular dive-in movie series at the Santa Clarita Aquatic Center. All films are family-friendly with PG ratings.

For $7 per person, families can enjoy the featured movie, which include "The Pirates: Band of Misfits" on Friday, June 28; Dr. Seuss’ "The Lorax" on Friday, July 12; "Brave" on Friday, July 26; and "ParaNorman" on Friday, Aug. 2, and either float in the pool or relax on deck. Concessions are open and movies begin at 7 p.m.

SCUBA diving certification: Get your certification to explore the exciting world under the waves in a controlled, convenient setting.

Underwater hockey: Yes, your favorite ice sport is now available in a low-impact, high-aerobic, friendly environment.

Aqua Zumba: The latest workout craze is now available in the water, blending the Zumba philosophy with transitional aqua fitness disciplines for a safe, challenging water-based workout.

Stand-up paddle boarding: Learn the basics of the sport on calm waters and be prepared for your next adventure when on vacation.

In addition to these classes, city pool facilities also offer lap swim, water exercise, synchronized swim team, water polo, dive team, swim team, and programming for seniors.

This summer I hope you’ll enjoy a cool workout or splash at your local city pool — we’ve got a team of lifeguards and instructors ready to help you make the most of your summer.
