What made West Ranch senior Joey Downey so good was his consistency.

In what could be considered a down year for the Foothill League in boys golf, Downey was quite the exception.

His numbers were never down.

They were always consistent.

And any year he would have been one of the top golfers.

However, what made Downey so special was his desire.

While some golfers are given opportunities to improve, there are others like Downey who create opportunities for themselves to improve.

His head coach Jeff Holen remarked how Downey got himself a job working at Robinson Ranch in Canyon Country — the complete opposite side of town from where he lives — so he could help pay for himself to compete in junior tournaments to get more experience.

He certainly made a lot of progress in 2013.

The 2012 Foothill League Most Valuable Player runner-up was on top of his game from his first step onto a golf course this season.

He was low medalist in the Foothill League’s first three matches and closed out the season with a medalist performance in the sixth and final league match.

With that victory, he also won the Newhall Land Cup — which goes to the golfer with the two lowest rounds in the last two league matches.

Downey was eight strokes better than Hart High’s Glen Lee for this year’s MVP.

Few could match Downey’s ability to keep the ball on the fairway throughout the season and his length off the tee increased.

His short game was improving.

His wedge work was a work in progress, but his putting helped his numbers out.

Off the course, The Master’s College-bound golfer was easy-going and kind.

But he had a desire that left him always wanting more, it seemed.

It was quite a combination from a golfer who helped lead his Wildcats to a sixth-straight Foothill League title.

It also leads him to the 2013 All-Santa Clarita Valley Boys Golfer of the Year prize.
